In evaluating the companies in their respective industries, FORTUNE asked more than 10,000 business executives at these companies to rate candidates on eight key attributes of reputation: innovation, use of assets, employee talent, management, investment value, social responsibility, financial soundness and products and services. And Centex ranked first in nearly every category.

TOP 20 COMPANIES FOR LEADERS
Centex Corporation is ranked among the top 20 companies for developing leaders, according to Chief Executive magazine. Centex ranks No. 14 on the list, among the likes of IBM, Microsoft, General Electric, Pfizer and Citigroup.
To create the list of top 20 companies for leaders, the magazine asked global human resources firm Hewitt Associates to conduct a survey to explore the organizational levers that contribute to leadership strength and depth in 240 major companies nationwide, both public and private. The purpose was to identify companies that attract, develop and retain leaders and to bring to light the programs, policies and procedures that lead to well-honed leadership development processes and a strong reputation. The list of organizations was narrowed to approximately 80, from which a panel of judges, selected by Chief Executive, chose the top 20.
